Short answer

SEO for plumbers is mostly local SEO. Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence, so the work is: a complete Google Business Profile with the right categories and steady reviews, one website page per service and per real service area, a fast mobile site with Plumber schema, consistent name, address and phone listings, a few local links, and call tracking to see what books jobs.

## Key takeaways

- Google says local results rank on **three factors: relevance, distance and prominence**. You control relevance and prominence, not distance.
- Your **Google Business Profile** is the single biggest lever. Pick a specific primary category, list every service, and keep reviews coming.
- Build **one page per service** and **one page per city you really serve**. Thin copy-paste city pages are what Google calls doorway abuse.
- Technical basics are short: fast on a phone, a clickable phone number, and **LocalBusiness or Plumber schema** that matches your profile.
- Measure SEO by **booked jobs from tracked calls**, not rankings. A month-three report should show calls and jobs by source.

## How Google ranks plumbers in local search

When someone searches "plumber near me" or "water heater repair", Google shows a map with three businesses (the local pack) above or near the regular results. Google's own help page says local results are based mainly on **relevance** (how well your profile matches the search), **distance** (how far you are from the searcher) and **prominence** (how well-known your business is, which includes reviews, links and articles about you).

You can't move your shop closer to every customer. So the job is to win on the other two: make it obvious to Google exactly what you do and where, and build signals that you are a real, busy, well-reviewed local business. Everything in this playbook maps to one of those two.

| Google factor | What it means for a plumber | Where you work on it |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Relevance | Google understands you do drain cleaning, water heaters, repiping, etc. | Profile categories and services, service pages |
| Distance | How close you are to the searcher | Accurate address or service area (not much else) |
| Prominence | You look established and trusted | Reviews, citations, local links, mentions |

## Step 1: Fix your Google Business Profile

Most of your calls from search will come through the map, so start here before touching the website.

- **Business name:** use your real name as it appears on your trucks and invoices. Google's guidelines say adding extra keywords like "Best 24/7 Plumber Dallas" can get your profile suspended.
- **Primary category:** "Plumber". Add secondary categories only if they describe what the business is, such as "Drainage service" or "Water heater installation service" if you really do that work. Google says to use as few categories as possible and not to use them as keywords.
- **Address and service area:** if customers don't come to your shop, hide the address and set a service area. Google's own example is a plumber working from home. Keep the area realistic; Google's guidance mentions roughly two hours of driving time as an outer limit.
- **Services:** list every job type you want, with a sentence each. These feed relevance.
- **Hours:** set real hours. If someone really answers at 2 a.m., say you are open 24 hours.
- **Photos:** trucks, team, real job sites, before-and-after shots. Add a few every month.
- **Reviews:** ask every happy customer, and reply to every review. Our guide on [how to get more Google reviews](/blog/how-to-get-more-google-reviews) has scripts and timing.

Don't create fake locations

Virtual offices and empty suites in towns you want to rank in are against Google's guidelines and a common cause of suspensions. Rank in nearby towns with real service pages and reviews from customers there instead.

## Step 2: Build service pages and real city pages

A one-page site that says "we do all plumbing" gives Google very little to match. Give each money service its own page: drain cleaning, sewer line repair, water heater repair and replacement, tankless installs, leak detection, repiping, emergency plumbing. Each page should answer what a homeowner wants to know: signs of the problem, what the job involves, typical timing, whether you offer financing, and a phone number at the top.

City pages are where plumbers get into trouble. Google's spam policies describe **doorway abuse** as pages targeted at specific cities that funnel users to one page, or substantially similar pages built only to rank. Swapping the town name on 40 identical pages is exactly that.

Build a city page only for towns where you do real work, and make each one different: the neighborhoods you cover, common local problems (hard water, older cast iron lines, slab leaks), jobs you have done there with photos, reviews from customers in that town, and your response time. If you can't write something specific about a town, skip the page.

### A simple site structure

- Home page: who you are, the area you serve, phone number, top services, reviews.
- One page per service (8 to 15 pages for most shops).
- One page per real service area (start with your 3 to 6 busiest towns).
- An emergency plumbing page that loads fast and puts the phone number first.
- About, reviews and contact pages with the same name, address and phone as your profile.

## Step 3: Cover the technical basics

Plumbing SEO doesn't need a lot of technical work, but a few basics matter because most emergency searches happen on a phone.

- **Speed on mobile:** test your pages with Google PageSpeed Insights. Google's Core Web Vitals targets are a Largest Contentful Paint under 2.5 seconds, Interaction to Next Paint under 200 milliseconds and Cumulative Layout Shift under 0.1.
- **Click-to-call:** the phone number should be a tap-to-call link in the header on every page.
- **Schema markup:** add LocalBusiness structured data, using the more specific **Plumber** type from schema.org. Include name, address (or area served), phone, hours and URL, and keep it identical to your Business Profile.
- **Titles and headings:** each page title should say the service and the place, for example "Water Heater Repair in Mesa, AZ | Your Company".
- **Search Console:** connect Google Search Console so you can see which searches show your pages and catch errors.

## Step 4: Citations, NAP and local links

A citation is any listing of your name, address and phone (NAP): Yelp, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, the BBB, Nextdoor, your local chamber of commerce. These don't need to number in the hundreds. What matters is that the main ones exist and match exactly. If you changed phone numbers or moved, find and fix the old listings first.

Links from real local sources are a strong prominence signal and hard for competitors to copy. Good sources for a plumbing company:

- Suppliers and manufacturers that list certified installers (water heater and tankless brands often do).
- Your chamber of commerce and local trade associations.
- Sponsorships of youth sports teams, school events or charity runs that link to sponsors.
- Local news stories, such as tips before a freeze or a community service project.
- Builders, property managers and real estate agents you already work with.

Skip the link packages

Offers of "500 backlinks for $99" are paid link schemes, which Google's spam policies prohibit. Ten links from real local businesses are worth more and carry no risk.

## Step 5: Track calls, not rankings

Rankings move around and differ block by block, so they are a weak scorecard. What pays you is booked jobs. Set up the basics so you can see them:

1. Add UTM tags to the website link on your Business Profile so profile visits show separately in your analytics.
2. Use a tracking number on the website (and as the primary number on your profile, with your main number listed as an additional number) so calls are counted by source.
3. Record the lead source on every job in ServiceTitan, Housecall Pro or Jobber.
4. Each month, count booked jobs and revenue from organic search and Maps, and compare to last month.

Then make sure the calls get answered. SEO that produces a 9 p.m. burst-pipe call nobody picks up is wasted. A [plumbing answering service](/plumbing-answering-service) or AI receptionist that books after-hours calls is part of the SEO return, not a separate project.

## The 90-day local SEO plan for plumbers

Here is the order we would work in, most important first. A solo owner can do most of it in a few hours a week.

| When | Task | Why it comes first |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Week 1 | Claim and verify Business Profile; fix name, primary category, hours, service area | Biggest effect on Maps, takes an afternoon |
| Week 1 | Set up call tracking, UTM on profile link, lead source in your FSM software | So you can measure everything after |
| Week 2 | List all services on the profile; upload 15 to 20 real photos | Relevance and trust |
| Weeks 2 to 3 | Start a review request after every completed job | Prominence builds slowly, start early |
| Weeks 3 to 6 | Write service pages for your top 6 to 8 money jobs | Gives Google something to match |
| Weeks 4 to 5 | Add Plumber schema, tap-to-call, fix mobile speed issues | Quick technical wins |
| Weeks 5 to 6 | Fix top citations (Yelp, Bing, Apple, BBB, chamber) to match NAP exactly | Consistency |
| Weeks 7 to 10 | Write city pages for your 3 to 6 busiest real service areas | Reach nearby towns without fake addresses |
| Weeks 8 to 12 | Ask suppliers, chamber, sponsors and partners for links | Prominence that competitors can't copy |
| Week 12 | Review calls and booked jobs by source; plan the next quarter | Decide what to double down on |

Expect Maps changes from profile fixes and reviews sooner than organic changes from new pages, which often take a few months to settle. If someone promises you page-one rankings in 30 days, that is a red flag.

## Doing it yourself or getting help

Everything above is doable by an owner or office manager. The hard part is keeping it going: photos every month, review requests after every job, new pages as you add services. If you would rather hand it off, Fullweek manages your Google Business Profile with automatic review requests, builds service, city and emergency pages that you own, and answers missed and after-hours calls so the leads SEO brings in become booked jobs. You get a monthly cost-per-booked-job report. See [pricing](/#pricing) or start with a [free city audit](/#audit).

## FAQ

How long does SEO take for a plumbing company?

Google Business Profile fixes and new reviews can show up in Maps within weeks. New service and city pages usually take a few months to rank. Plan on a quarter before judging results, and judge them by booked jobs.

What is the difference between SEO and local SEO for plumbers?

Local SEO is the part of SEO focused on showing up for searches in your service area, mainly the Google map results and "near me" searches. For a plumber it is most of the work, since nearly every customer is local.

Should I make a page for every city near me?

No. Make pages only for towns you really serve, and make each one specific with local jobs, reviews and details. Near-identical city pages with the name swapped are what Google calls doorway abuse.

What schema should a plumbing website use?

Use LocalBusiness structured data with the specific Plumber type from schema.org. Include your name, phone, hours, address or service area and website, and keep it matching your Google Business Profile.

Do reviews really help plumbers rank?

Google lists reviews as part of prominence, one of its three local ranking factors, and recommends replying to them. Reviews also drive whether a searcher calls you or the next listing.
